Soffit is the material that covers the underside of your roof overhang, and fascia is the flat board that runs along the edge of the roofline where the gutters attach. Together they close off the gap between your roof and your exterior walls, and in Florida they do more work than most homeowners realize — they're a ventilation system, a pest barrier, and a first line of defense against wind-driven rain all at once.
Every house with an overhanging roof has an open triangular space between the top of the exterior wall and the underside of the roof deck.
